Success Stories
New Logistics Service – Full Senior Team
Jet2
Jet2, known for its expertise in short-haul destinations and entrepreneurial mindset, faced ongoing issues with limited inflight stock from their previous supplier. They decided to change their inflight offerings and deliver a more personalised experience by interacting with customers before, during, and after their flights.
Traditionally, onboard retail products for short-haul flights are sourced through a single wholesaler that serves multiple airlines. Jet2 broke away from this model by establishing its own exclusive range of inflight products and services, requiring the development of an entirely new logistics operation. Despite being skilled recruiters, Jet2 recognised the need for external support to hire specialists for this new function, which fell outside their usual areas of expertise.
With over 25 years of working and recruiting in logistics, the team at Slater Austin was selected to recruit the lead role along with whole distribution centre management team.
Through very careful search and selection, Slater Austin recruited the Head of Logistics in the first instance and then the senior management roles in distribution, shift management and inventory management. Jet2 then proceeded to recruit the remaining staff required for the operation.
The state-of-the-art, 150,000 square foot Middlewich facility now employs over 300 people and delivers upwards of 25 million items annually to Jet2 flights. The transition and new operation have been deemed a great success by Jet2
Niche Public Sector Recruitment in the South West
Ted Wragg Trust
The Ted Wragg Trust comprises 18 schools in Devon, with a small procurement team that required building from the ground up. The finance director managed procurement with support from a local legal practice after the contracts officer retired.
The school trust oversees all procurement activities outside of the direct recruitment of teaching staff, which requires differing expertise. Recruitment efforts had difficulty attracting skilled procurement professionals.
Slater Austin was brought in to design a new procurement structure and recruit suitable candidates. The main challenge was finding experienced public sector procurement professionals with the ability to manage upcoming changes in UK procurement legislation and meet the trust’s sector requirements. Three roles were agreed: a senior procurement and contracts officer, plus two direct reports.
Slater Austin added immediate value via targeted search campaigns and vacancy advertisements, as well as direct networking and headhunting. Prioritising the lead role, they filled it through network search and selection, with the remaining positions being appointed shortly afterwards.
UK Procurement Lead
Saputo
Slater Austin’s relationship with Saputo is a wonderful example of a company engaging Slater Austin’s expertise across multiple divisions. In this example, consultancy and recruitment.
With a UK revenue of over £1 billion, Support so is a highly successful dairy business. In the UK, they produce some of the UK’s leading cheese and spreads brands, including Cathedral City and Clover.
However, procurement teams, even in large organisations such as supposed to, can be relatively small. The CEO had asked Slater Austin to perform a strategic review of the procurement function. Following the review Slater Austin was asked to recruit a new procurement director, to lead the implementation of the new procurement strategy.
Highly proficient in the recruitment regular positions, Slater Austin was asked to lead the recruitment of this new lead role, due to its knowledge, expertise and network for this specialist function.
Saputo is a global organisation, with strong ethical responsibility and a well-renowned code of conduct for its suppliers. The new recruit needed to have strong ethics and team values, as well as carry the gravitas and expertise for the role.
Slater Austin led a two-pronged approach, off search and selection and advertised recruitment. Over 200 conversations were had with perspective candidates and over 650 people were considered for the role.
The role was successfully fulfilled and the team is going from strength to strength.
